This coming Sunday, Amber is preaching on one of the most challenging parables of Jesus, the Persistent Widow. I am not going to do anything but encourage you to read the text, Luke 18:1-8, and to chew on it a bit before Amber brilliantly pontificates on it this Sunday.
The following Sunday, May 12, is special for a wide variety of reasons. First and most importantly, Kathy Bouchard will be giving her inaugural sermon here at Midway Hills. As you no doubt know, Kathy has begun studies at Brite Divinity School this past fall, and is one of our candidates under care and consideration for ordination. She wrote an amazing paper on the Ascension for theology, and is transposing it into a sermon for May 12. I hope you will keep her in prayer as she prepares, and I hope you will make sure to be there. The second reason May 12 is huge is that we’re doing jazz. Worship will follow a regular pattern, but all the hymns, offertory, responses, and anything musical will have a distinct jazz flavor to it. Kathy is preaching, Greg is doing the children’s sermon, and I’ll be playing piano with an outstanding combo. So May 12—mark it down. (I know that some of you will be out being or seeing Mothers, and that’s all right; we will have another jazz service if this one goes as well as it seems it’s going to.)
May 19 is Pentecost. The birthday of the church. The power of the Holy Spirit. The call to go out and do, not stay in and think. Oh, there are things in store that I am not going to ruin the surprise of by writing about. I will say that we’ll be looking at some parts of the Acts of the Apostles to see what it means to be a part of a church and a Church that is alive. You do not want to miss it. The series will continue through June—make plans to be with us!
I will be out this Sunday—I’m headed to the general Saint Louis area to be in a great friend’s wedding. But I will be back Tuesday, and look forward to seeing you all then.
